How to get your "Carte Vitale" ?

The Carte Vitale is a French health insurance card. All your medical needs (consultations, hospitalisation, surgery, basic dental, etc.) are reimbursed with a Carte Vitale. The first step to receiving your Carte Vitale is choosing a health insurance company to register with from the selection of providers in France. Once you have done this, you will receive a temporary social security number and proof of your medical coverage. The next and most important step is obtaining your permanent social security number. If you have never been insured in France, you must send the following documents to your health care provider:

  • A copy of your birth certificate along with a certified translation

  • 2 ID/passport size photos (can be taken at any of the photo booth machines in the metro)

  • A 'relevé d’identité bancaire' or RIB in order for reimbursements to be directly deposited into your account

  • A "Déclaration du Choix de Médecin Traitant" (optional) to declare your primary doctor in France to your health care provider

  • A copy of your temporary social security number

It is important that you send these documents as soon as you have received your temporary social security number.

After you have sent your paperwork, a progress report on your Carte Vitale will be given to you 2-3 weeks.

We hope this information is helpful in your process of obtaining a Carte Vitale!

And of course, never hesitate to ask for help if you have any questions regarding the process during any of our trainings.
